How Rotary Handles Money

Partners and Families
The role of the Rotary Partners (Spouses and Families) Coordinator is to organise Partner events and to support the club at certain times of the year when hosting major functions. Rotary Partners have social get-together’s and enjoy special events, such as cinema nights, visits to art galleries, musical performances etc… In addition Rotary Partners combine social events with fund-raising activities in support of local charities including Camp Quality, the camp for teenagers with cancer and Karuna Hospice, the service providing palliative care in the home for people suffering from a terminal illness. Rotary Partners are welcome to attend all club meetings, but particularly designated Partners nights, when the club hosts interesting guest speakers. Rotarians are also free to join Partners functions.
Club History
The Club was originally chartered with 20 members on 15th April 1972 as the Rotary Club of Ashgrove. The Club’s activities extended to incorporate the developing suburb of The Gap, and on 14th March 1990, the club’s name was changed to “Rotary Club of Ashgrove / The Gap. Os Smith was a charter member of the club in 1972, and is still a very active club member 35 years later. Several other club members have over 20 years continuous membership. The Club has been actively involved in all avenues of Rotary service since its inception. In most years, we have sponsored both inbound and outbound Exchange Students. For a period of 10 years from 1979, the main event on the Club’s calendar was the Westside Cultural Festival run in conjunction with the local Red Cross. It was an excellent fundraising activity for the Club incorporating an art show (with a preview wine and cheese night on the Friday). Continuing on Saturday & Sunday, ethnic & cultural groups and the Club provided stalls with plenty of food, goods for sale, entertainment and competitions for all ages. Community Service
Historically, Rotary has been a vocational organisation since its origins during the early Paul Harris days. This tradition has continued over the years. However it has also had a strong community focus throughout its history. Our Club has been a strong supporter of a number of community events and will continue this year. In addition it will endeavour to “develop the tradition” by continuing its presence in Ashgrove with the Carols By Candlelight started in 2009. Youth Service
New Generations Services prepare young people for a better future by improving their life skills while recognising the diversity of their needs. Programs are also designed to help young people develop their potential. Aims: To maintain the Club’s increased emphasis on providing youth services. Through active and regular contact with schools and school principals, continue to promote the opportunities that Rotary and our Club can offer young people in our community. To implement the structured Rotary International Programs for New Generations and other programs to improve the life skills of young people in our community. Activities and programs: To sponsor and support: One young person to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). Three young people to participate in RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment). The participation of one selected student in NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) in anberra. The participation of three students in The Science Experience in Brisbane. Vocational Service
Historically, Rotary has been a vocational organisation since its origins during the early Paul Harris days. This tradition has continued over the years. Four Way Test Of the things we think, say or do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Aims Foster high ethical standards in business and professions in accordance with the ideals of Rotary. Encourage members to use their vocational talents to benefit the community. Uphold the recognition of all useful occupations. To have vocational programs as a vehicle for promoting Rotary in the wider community. Activities and Programs Hold a Pride of Workmanship Awards evening. Hold a Four – Way Test ethical dilemmas’ evening for members. Conduct selective workplace visits to acquire a greater understanding of other businesses. Invite members of the business community to address the club to foster the understanding of their business.

AIMS To advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS Develop a greater understanding of the activities of the Rotary Foundation with information sessions Inform members of the Rotary Future Vision program Encourage an annual club giving to the Rotary Foundation Support the Rotary World Peace fellows program at UQ Seek opportunities for members to act as counselors for a Peace Fellow or an Ambassadorial scholar.

Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony
The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap, together with the Department of Immigration & Citizenship, hold the Rotary club’s Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day, which falls on the 26 January. Persons interested in receiving their Australian citizenship at this small and personal ceremony should contact the Department of Immigration & Citizenship (ph. 131880) and advise their wishes to the officers with their application for citizenship. GRIPPS
Gap Regional Instrumental Primary Performers School GRIPPS began in 1992 and continues to be a very exiting and successful annual event. As a joint Ashgrove / The Gap Rotary Club and local schools’ initiative, GRIPPS provides an opportunity for many talented young musicians to further develop their musical skills and friendships. Children from 13 state and private primary schools in the Gap / Ashgrove and surrounding districts are invited to participate in GRIPPS and the camp is limited to about 175 students. These participants are selected through a comprehensive auditioning process. Music and instrumental music teachers for many of the schools together with about sixteen professional musicians work with the students. The students participate in the following activities throughout the week: Master classes Tutorials Bands / Ensembles an 80 piece Orchestra (for the more advances students) and A Massed Choir (consisting of all participating students). The GRIPPS camp is held from Monday to Thursday in the last week of term 3. The week concludes with a barbeque on Thursday evening followed by a concert. Carols by Candlelight
The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap arranges and organizes the Ashgrove Carols by Candlelight community project in Dorrington Park normally on the Saturday evening before Christmas using the Northern Suburbs Hockey Club grounds. The event is supported by The Gap Ward’s Councillor Geraldine Knapp who also arranges assistance with funding for the event through the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative program as well as providing other support and assistance through her Ward Office. Scheduled time for commencement is 5.00pm. The Rocus Band provides lively big band jazz entertainment to get everybody in a jolly mood. This is followed by a wonderful Christmas Carols program professionally presented by the Westside Orchestra and the Ignations Choir, with other local artists and very ably conducted by David Law. The event is compered by one of the local TV or radio personalities. The children either bring or buy glow candles and bracelets to set the mood for the event. A visit by Santa in his Sleigh is always a great hit with the little ones. A wonderful fireworks display concludes the evening. The program is well received by the Ashgrove Community and supported by Ashgrove and the The Gap businesses.
